News Bulletin 1

Hello and welcome to our Regatta Update which will keep you informed as we approach 25 October.

Expressions of interest are rolling in, with 26 teams indicating they would like to compete in the Challenge so far. Full entry fees have been received from Intercontinental Hotels Group, Servcorp, DAFF, Australian National Museum and ATO, ensuring these teams a place in the event. We are limiting the number of teams to 36 this year, so get your entry fee in soon to guarantee your team a place in the Regatta.

Don’t forget to join the regatta blog on our website and share what your team is up to – we love to see photos too! It’s a great way to promote what your team is doing to prepare, and also find out how community-minded your organisation is! The blog is a great place to share your fundraising ideas with other teams as well.

A few Pink Ladies have been invited to do some ‘spruiking’ for the Regatta at an ATO Happy Hour next month. We would be delighted to come to your workplace to meet you and your workmates to talk about the regatta. Our aim in putting on the regatta is not just fundraising, but also awareness raising about breast cancer and the role of Dragons Abreast.

How Dragons Abreast helps and works for individuals:

Many of the survivors who join Dragons Abreast come to us quite frail and depleted after their treatment and it is such a joy to see them blossom over time and regain their strength and joie de vivre as they get back into life. Back on their feet again they, in turn, nurture more newcomers and also assist us in actively advocating and educating others to raise breast cancer awareness in the drive towards earlier diagnoses with resulting better outcomes.

It is a very positive organisation!

If you would like to learn more about Dragons Abreast why not order a copy of A Dragon’s Tale via our website and the sales will all help us! It also makes a great gift for someone you know who has travelled the breast cancer journey!

“A Dragon’s Tale is a fabulous book that captures the vibrant and poignant history of Dragons Abreast in Australia. Dragons Abreast provides an understanding support network for women after a diagnosis of breast cancer and dragon boat paddling is a tangible activity that draws out the innate qualities of breast cancer survivors - hope, inspiration, excitement and determination to beat a dreaded disease faced by millions of women around the world.”

Food for thought:
One in eight Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. 7 Australian women a day die of breast cancer.
Dragons Abreast provides a "face" for these statistics whilst also acting as a beacon of HOPE and INSPIRATION for those travelling the journey with breast cancer.

Where does your money go?

Proceeds from the DAACT Regatta will be given to a number of breast cancer causes. Dragons Abreast Australia will be the major benefactor to assist the development of new DA teams across Australia.

Did you know that about $8,000 is needed to assist setting up a new Dragons Abreast team in a country area? There are currently six new teams wanting to set up.

Quote of the day:
Don’t wait for a light to appear at the end of the tunnel, stride down there and light the bloody thing yourself” – Sara Henderson – Bestselling author and former Northern Territory pastoralist who died of breast cancer in 2005.
