Australian Rally Champion Neal Bates, policemen, doctors, public servants, marketing managers, school teachers and the Coca Cola Corporation came together on Saturday to race in the Annual Dragons Abreast Dragon Boat Challenge, proving that breast cancer affects people from all walks of life.
Prosperous Mountain Lion Dancers and Phantom Drummers added to the party vibe and all teams dressed in their ‘party gear’ to celebrate the 10th birthday of Dragons Abreast Australia. Medical teams dressed in scrubs and some even wore pyjamas in the battle to win the title of best dressed team.
Australia founder of Dragons Abreast ACT and Region, Anna Wellings Booth, cut the celebratory birthday cake. “Dragons Abreast exists to promote positivity after breast cancer by keeping the spirit alive,” said Marion Blake, ACT Coordinator.
“If today reminded just one young woman to stop and check herself; or a woman over 50 to have a mammogram screening, we will have made an important difference.
“We are a club that really doesn't want new members, as membership means a diagnosis of breast cancer; however we welcome all people who have had breast cancer, regardless of age or sporting ability, to come and have a paddle with us.”
This annual event is a major fundraiser for Dragons Abreast and raises funds for the Dragons Abreast organisation both nationally as well as locally. They also donate funds to Breast Cancer Network Australia, Clare Holland House and the Otis Foundation to support those travelling the breast cancer journey.
