Dragons Abreast Townsville has been an active Dragons Abreast group for 7 years. A vibrant group of breast cancer survivors and supporters meet every Saturday morning on the Townsville Strand at 7am for a paddle in the Coral Sea.

Come and try something new!!

I joined Dragons Abreast as I needed to be part of a group of people who have been through a similar journey of breast cancer treatment and mostly I wanted to surrounded by survivors interested in regaining strength and fitness.  I felt a sense of hope for the future when meeting new friends in Dragons Abreast knowing that some of these girls had had a Breast Cancer diagnosis, some, one, five ten years before. (Bec)

Townsville is blessed with weather that allows us to paddle all year round, however we take a break from paddling over the Christmas/New Year period when members may be away on holidays and we can experience unpredictable tropical weather conditions.  We are often accompanied on our paddle by turtles, dolphins and other sea life.

Dragons Abreast Townsville is part of the National movement of Dragons Abreast clubs who seek to help people with a diagnosis of breast cancer understand they can lead full and active lives despite the physical limitations imposed by breast surgery. We do this by encouraging women to “achieve their dream” of regaining an active, adventurous lifestyle despite a diagnosis of breast cancer. Through our activities we seek to promote breast cancer awareness in the community by being a face to the breast cancer statistics and promoting early detection and diagnosis.

We take our role of promoting breast cancer awareness very seriously through creative media events, participation in Cancer Council Queensland initiatives and networking with community organisations to raise awareness about breast cancer. Dragons Abreast Townsville is now an established part of the Townsville community and we participate in local community events wherever possible to promote awareness of breast cancer and the importance of early detection

In, 2010, a sporting Dragon Boat Club was formed (Townsville Dragon Boat Club). The Dragons Abreast team will continue as a vital part of that club. We have three dragon boats –two full size boats and a half size boat.

Dragons Abreast Townsville are very fortunate to have received support from many parts of the Townsville community, including our foundation sponsors, Mater Health Services, BHP Billiton, Townsville Port Authority, Zonta Club Townsville and House and Garden.  Our current sponsors include Arena Engineering and Storage King Townsville, Hyde Park.

Come and join us for a paddle every Saturday morning right behind the Tobruk swimming pool on the beach – southern end of The Strand.

When I was having treatment for breast cancer I just wanted life to be normal again and to get back into regular exercise and meeting up with people socially again. I joined Dragons Abreast and was able to do just that, and have the added benefit of meeting other women who had been through what I had and who understood all the things that I was thinking. (Jane)

Meet on the beach at 7am and be on the water by 7.30am.
Meet a friendly new bunch of people, have fun and get fit. Then join us for coffee after paddling. We paddle for about an hour.

I heard about Dragons Abreast whilst participating in an Encore program.  It sounded like a great form of exercise to regain and maintain my upper body strength.  Little did I know that the camaraderie of being with a fantastic group of women travelling the same journey as me would bring such enjoyment and so many new experences to my life? Townsville Dragons Abreast

Louise Muir from Dragons Abreast ACT recently had a great morning visiting DA Townsville and went for a paddle in the open sea with them which was very different to the lake in Canberra. She says 'they were a lovely welcoming bunch.' - August 2010
