Our Champions at Caloundra
Eureka, we did it! We made it !
I'm pooped.
One picture is worth a thousand words - No words need be spoken.
The true meaning of Dragons Abreast -- support in more ways than one!
Our first year !
Our trailer has been completed!
Dragons Abreast Ballarat are most grateful to the several Ballarat companies and industries who have generously donated materials for the construction of our trailer - also to Wal Askari of Maxitrans who built it in his own time after work and at weekends.
With so many activities now behind us, it seems so long ago that we formed our Dragon Boat team in Ballarat, however we are reminded it is only one year ago we all gathered to meet and agreed on the establishment of our club.
Dragons Abreast was formed in Ballarat with the aim to promote wellbeing, confidence, comradeship and purpose for women undergoing treatment, and survivors of breast cancer.
During this time we have been fundraising and bringing focus to the community of our need to purchase a dragonboat for our members in Ballarat and the surrounding district. The boat will be used in the popular dragonboat races now being staged in Victoria, Australia, and the world!
The next big meeting will be held in Queensland in 2007 and our goal is to enter a team and represent Ballarat.
Fundraising
Our activities have included sausage sizzles, raffles, and a family fun day and memorial service at Pax Hill Scout camp.
Our family funday was a first for us and the memorial service gave us a chance to be together and give thanks in the beautiful natural setting of the bush.
The rest of the day offered breast cancer survivors, families and friends the opportunity to enjoy the wide variety of activities within the camp such as bushwalking and abseiling.
Volunteers and members of our group provided many interesting goods and tasty food for sale at our stalls, together with providers of Reiki and relaxation massagers who were kept busy throughout the day. We are grateful for the support of these providers.
Training with Geelong Dragons Abreast
The Ballarat group is very grateful for the support of the Geelong Dragons Abreast team. They have offered the use of their boat for us to train with them and learning paddling techniques until be purchase our own boat. those of us who have participated in the paddling in Geelong have enjoyed the experience and learned some basic skills.
